This masterclass with David Latham will focus on practical ways of making in-depth connections with Shakespeare’s language in order to breathe life into that language and claim it as our own. Using a single act from one of Shakespeare’s plays, the participants will be taken through a process of rehearsal that will deal with ways to bring the world of the play and the characters to life through the use of the text. Actor and director participants will explore the action and images within the text in this five day intensive.

David Latham has worked in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, US and UK. He works as an actor, a director and a teacher. He was Director of Theatre Training, Director of the Birmingham Conservatory, Director of the Langham Workshop for Classical Direction and an Associate Artist during his fifteen years at the Stratford Festival. He is a Master Teacher and works regularly at the National Theatre School of Canada, the Birmingham Conservatory and the Globe Theatre Conservatory. He has directed at the Stratford Festival, the Centaur Theatre, the Globe Theatre, the Vancouver Playhouse and various companies in Australia. He was Dean of the Victorian College of the Arts Drama School in Melbourne and Director of the Vancouver Playhouse Acting School.

Sharry and Guy have been a part of the acting ensemble at the Shaw for thirty years. They have developed this manners intensive for the young company members at the Festival and Queen's University Students after acting in dozens of plays by Shaw and his contemporaries. The focus will be on the high Victorian/Edwardian era and will look expressly at Chekhov, with this year's Master Playwright's Festival ChekhovFest in mind.
Participants: $100 - 24 max. Participants will do the full dress, promenade, scene study component with Q & A discussion.
Auditors: $40 - Auditors observe the work of the participants. There will be opportunities for auditors to join in the discussion and some chance for Q & A

Thom Allison returns to Winnipeg from Broadway's Priscilla Queen Of The Desert, from leading The Shaw Festival's critically acclaimed hit Ragtime and his duties as a judge on CBC's Over The Rainbow.
zone41 - in partnership with the Royal Manioba Theatre Centre -is offering this masterclass designed for the singing actor to deepen their skill set. It will be suitable for the musical theatre student, up to the working professional. Those under 16 are welcome to audit. Each participant will be asked to prepare one song to on with Thom. Class will be accompanied by Scott Christian.

dialect intensive
While focusing on British Received Pronunciation as a model, voice, text and dialect specialist Shannon Vickers will share the tools every actor can add to their technique to speak text in a dialect with confidence.
Exploring RP with an overview of the sounds of speech and how communication is affected by oral posture, word groupings, rhythm and intonation. We'll also explore online resources that aid in creating a desired sound pattern. The goal will be to explore an easy and physical way to 'hook' into the dialect while focusing on acting.
Monologue/Scene work to bring the dialect to life while continuing to focus on phrasing and text work to keep the story of the scene primary and the work visceral.

SHANNON VICKERS is an Associate Professor and teaches Voice, Speech, and Text in the University of Winnipeg's Department of Theatre and Film. She is an Associate Teacher of Knight-Thompson Speechwork, and has served as a voice/text/dialect coach for productions at Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, zone41 theatre, Theatre Projects Manitoba, Prairie Theatre Exchange, Winnipeg Jewish Theatre, Sarasvati Productions, Rainbow Stage, Shakespeare in the Ruins, Citadel Theatre's Banff Professional Program, and Canadian Stage Theatre.
